Gold in West Africa

Gold is Ghana’s major mineral exports contributing about 35% of the country’s total exports.

Ghana has become Africa’s second largest gold producer behind South Africa, which is exceptional considering the relative small size of the country. The country’s mining sector is centered around its gold production.

Taekwa Gold Mine

- Largest gold mine in Ghana. It has a mineral resource of about 15.3 million ounces of gold and a mineral reserve of approximately 9.9 million ounces of gold.

Chirano Gold Mine

- Opened in 2005, the mine currently produces an average of 3,800 kgs of gold each year.

Nzema Gold Mine

- Situated in the southern part of Ghana, this mine has mineral resources estimated to be about 36.7 million tons of 1.3g/t grade and an inferred resource of about 7.6 million tons of 1.3 g/t gold.

Ahafo Mine (Operated by Newmont)

- Located in the southern part of Ghana and contains a gold reserve of nearly 6,2 MOZ (175 tonnes).

Akyem Mine (Operated by Newmont)

- The mine has proven and probable gold reserves of 3,25 MOZ (92 tonnes).

Iduapriem Open Pit Mine


Obuasi Underground Mine

is owned by major gold producer AngloGold Ashanti. It is primarily a high-grade underground mine with periodic open-pit operations during its long history. Mining began at Obuasi more than 110 years ago, in 1897.

The Wassa Open Pit Gold Mine


Gold production in Mali came to 49.6 MT in 2017, making the country Africa’s third-largest gold producer after South Africa and Ghana.


This is in part due to the efforts of artisanal miners; like Ghana, Mali is home to many artisanal miners, and the country’s government estimates that informal miners produced about 50 MT in 2017

The Sadiola mine

- Located in southwest Mali near the border with Senegal in a remote part of the Kayes region, the giant Sadiola permit covers 302 square kilometers. The mine has had a major, positive economic impact on Mali since it opened in 1997, following liberalization of the sector. That same year, gold had already become the primary source of Mali's foreign currency.

The Morila gold mine

is situated some 280 kilometres southeast of Bamako, the capital of Mali and 900 kilometres to the north of the port of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire. The mine, is scheduled to be closed down in 2019, after producing over 200 tonnes of gold since it opened in 2000.

Burkina Faso

is one of the fastest rising gold producing countries in the world. A decade ago the country was better known for the cotton it grows than the gold it mines, but since then a gold rush has transformed it into one of Africa’s hottest destinations for frontier mining. Burkina Faso has been the 5th largest gold producer in Africa since 2012. Over the past nine years, about six new mines have been commission and exploration for gold is still ongoing in several other locations.

The Kiaka mine

is one of the largest gold mines in the Burkina Faso and in the world. The mine is located in the center of the country in Zoundwéogo Province. The mine has estimated reserves of 5 million oz of gold.

The Bissa mine

is one of the largest gold mines in the country. The mine is located in the center of the country in Centre-Nord Region. The mine has estimated reserves of 4.9 million oz of gold.
